Senior Capstone
The undergraduate senior Thesis is a self-directed yearlong investigation. It begins with identifying a problem and proposed solution in the fall semester, and concludes with testing the solution through a design project in the spring. The Thesis combines skills from the classroom and studio, which I have acquired over the past 4 years and it is structured to encourage critical thinking, develop deeper knowledge, solve challenging problems, and advance my design skills.
Why are elderly people so reluctant to go into assisted living? How can a space be created so that elders will want to go into assisted living?
About
Paraiso is an assisted living facility for elders of all types of social class, gender, race, and disabilities who are retired and want to avoid the institutionalized environment of a typical nursing home. It is a space intended to eliminate stigmas by incorporating the Eden Alternative. Most of these people have difficulty living on their own and need supervision. Thus, staff with appropriate medical and healthcare training, as well as multiple years of experience, will be mandatory.
There is a building reserved for people that have developed cognitive issues or diseases and need more attention and care than most, Building C. There is also a building reserved for those who need very little attention, Building B, and perhaps they simply need someone to remind them to take their medicine at night, or would need assistance if they've fallen and can't get up. The main building, or Building A, is for those who fall somewhere in the middle.
In the facility, residents will have the opportunity to enjoy amenities such as a yoga studio, gardening area, swimming pool, counseling services, and meditation spaces. There is also a health clinic and pharmacy to ensure quick and easy wellness exams and prescription pick up. The faculty spaces include a lounge, nurse station, administration office, and storage rooms.

The spaces naturally flow together in a mix of private and public spaces, but are also organized in a functional, user-friendly manner. The organic shape gives the floor plan a sense of life. The overall theme has a modern feel with a "Fifties Florida" influence with contrasting colors. Lots of natural light and tropical plants throughout the space will enhance the biophilic design, with several spaces open to the elements. Natural materials, such as wood and stone, are used in majority of all spaces
